I'm listening to a dialogue between the philosopher Ken Wilber and Stuart Davis about the "ideal" spiritual practice, from the website Integral Naked. This is Monday morning, after a weekend during which I learned that Wilber was having a medical emergency, involving seizures and heart irregularities. He was admitted, apparently unconscious, to the ICU, and it looked a bit touchy for a while. The last word was that he had had a reaction to a medication he was on (Wilber has what is basically a chronic fatigue condition), and that under medical care, is going to be fine, though he has to be in the hospital for a week of dialysis.
This, it's fair to say, hit me as hard as when a friend in Russia told me his wife had a potentially lethal disease. I was reading the forums on IN, and dozens and dozens of people wrote in to express their love for the man and fear that he was going to check out so early in the game. Especially as Integral Institute gets its baby feet underneath it, and is beginning to reach out in so many dimensions, the idea that Wilber would kick off was just so sad. When the good news came through, that Wilber wasn't going to die (now), one forum writer said, "Ken, please no more lessons on impermanence for a while." My sentiments, too.
